What is important when you have Botulinum toxin (Botox) is the total number of units you give. Practitioners can choose to dilute their Botox with different amounts of copy, and this will affect the extent to which Botox is spread from the injection site. Personally, when I treat wrinkle lines between the eyebrows in the wrinkle area (Glabella) I like to use them in a concentrated form (100 units of Botox diluted in 1 ml of salt, giving 10 units per 0.1ml), as I want to spread Botox is quite limited. When I treat the horizontal forehead, I prefer to use it in a liquid form (100 units in 2mls of salt) so that I can achieve more botox diffusion over the wider muscle area.
So why are you giving so many units? Because the study shows a clear dose-response relationship between the duration of the effect and the dose given to you. If you place 20 units of Botox into your glabella wrinkle area, it will last about 16 weeks in 75% percent of customers, whereas if a half-dose customer will only survive 35% longer, you may therefore need more many treatments before the end of four months after your last treatment with this dose.
Therefore, if you build normal and normal facial muscles, and you have wrinkles and your forehead is treated with Botox, you may get a total dose of 40-50 units. This can definitely have an impact over the next four months. Obviously if you are very lean or very gifted with facial muscles then the dosage should be adjusted accordingly.
Remember that if your doctor uses Dysport (marketed under the name Azzalure in Europe) the number of units will vary. It will be about 3 times higher than Botox or Xeomin as Dysport / Azzalure, unit to unit, just one third as strong as Botox. So one Botox unit equals about 3 Dysport / Azzalure units. When given in the appropriate dose study it has been shown that Dysport / Azzalure is as effective as Botox. Therefore, ask your practitioner about the amount of dose they are planning to use. If there are more or less of the above mentioned quantities for the forehead and wrinkle areas, ask them why.
