MIT's Invisible "Second Skin" XPL Cream Makes Wrinkles Disappear

Scientists at MIT, Massachusetts General Hospital, Evidence, and Olivo Laboratories have developed new materials that can protect and tighten skin temporarily, and smooth wrinkles. With further development, it can also be used to deliver medicines to help treat skin conditions such as eczema and other types of dermatitis.
The material, a silicone-based polymer that can be applied to the skin as a thin, invisible layer, mimics the mechanical and elastic properties of healthy, youthful skin. In tests with human subjects, the researchers found that the substance can re-form the "eye bag" under the lower eyelids and also improve skin hydration. This "second skin" type can also be customized to provide long-lasting ultraviolet protection.
It is an invisible coating that can block, provide cosmetic repairs, and potentially deliver drugs locally to the area being treated. These three things can really make them ideal for human use.
As the #skin ages, it becomes less robust and less elastic - a problem that can be exacerbated by sun exposure. This damages the skin's ability to protect against extreme temperatures, toxins, microorganisms, radiation, and injury. About 10 years ago, the research team aimed to develop a protective layer that rejuvenates healthy skin, for both medical and cosmetic applications.
The researchers created a library of more than 100 possible polymers, all of which contained a chemical structure called siloxane - a chain of silicon and oxygen-rotating atoms. These polymers can be inserted into a network arrangement known as a cross-linked polymer (XPL) layer. Researchers then test the ingredients to find the best fit for the appearance, strength, and elasticity of healthy skin.
The best looking material has elastic properties that are very similar to the skin. In laboratory tests, it is easily returned to its original state after being stretched over 250 percent (natural skin can extend about 180 percent). In laboratory tests, the elasticity of the XPL novel is much better than the other two types of wounds used on the skin - silica gel and polyurethane film.
XPL is now in two-step process. First, the polysiloxane component is applied to the skin, followed by a platinum catalyst that drives the polymer to form a strong cross-film that stays on the skin for up to 24 hours. This catalyst needs to be added after the polymer is used because after this step the material becomes too rigid to propagate. Both layers are used as creams or ointments, and once spread to the skin, XPL becomes essentially invisible.
Researchers conducted several studies on humans to test the safety and efficacy of materials. In one study, XPL was used in the lower eye area where "eye bags" often form as the skin ages. This eye bag is caused by the appearance of a fat pad under the lid. When used, it uses a strong compress that tightens the skin, lasting 24 hours.
In another study, XPL was used on the skin of the arm to test its elasticity. When the treated XPL skin is disturbed by the suction cup, it returns to its original position faster than the untreated skin.
Researchers are also testing the ability of ingredients to prevent water loss from dry skin. Two hours after application, the XPL treated skin experienced less water loss than the treatment treated with luxury commercial moisturizers. Skin coated with petrolatum / petroleum jelly is as effective as XPL in a test done two hours after treatment, but after 24 hours, skin treated with XPL retains more water. No study participants reported any irritation with XPL.
