Botox and Dysport / Azzalure are different molecular formulations of the type Botulinum Toxin A. Both have long (over 20 years) of sustained medical use. It is known that one unit of Botox is not equal to 1 unit of Dysport / Azzalure. In Europe the proposal is to use 2.5 units of Dysport / Azzalure for every 1 unit of Botox. But there is very little actual clinical study to support this proposal.
A study of 62 patients in 2006 showed that both treatments are effective in treating wrinkles. However, it showed that Botox improved in terms of increased wrinkles and 16 weeks of effect than Dysport for forehead wrinkles when the Botox to Dysport / Azzalure ratio was 1: 2.5. The authors say that this study was financially supported by Allergan, the maker of Botox.
However, another study was conducted in 2007 on 26 people. This time the ratio of 1: 3 Botox to Dysport / Azzalure is used so unfortunately it is not comparable to the 2006 study. However, this study shows that Dysport / Azzalure is higher than Botox with better time to effect at 20 weeks after injection . The authors stated that this study did not receive any financial support from any manufacturer. The study also included electrical measurements of muscle activity as well as a digital photography assessment conducted by an independent panel of 3 examiners who evaluated the wrinkles of the person in the study.
The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that there is no clearest type of botulinum toxin for cosmetic use. The efficacy of both products in terms of their cosmetic effects is well documented as their safety record. The duration of the action depends largely on how many units are administered. If 3 units of Dysport / Azzalure are used for each of the Botox units, then the research suggests a longer period than Botox, and vice versa appears to be true when the recommended 2.5: 1 ratio is used.
In terms of other aspects of patient satisfaction, especially the speed of onset of effects and the relative incidence of side effects there is no research to guide the results. The median time to effect onset was from day 3 for both products and reached a maximal effect on day 30.
