The Estrogen and Wrinkled Skin Connection

Can Estrogen Prevent Wrinkles?
Did you know that in addition to using the best wrinkle creams you can buy, for women of a certain age, estrogen or natural plant-based hormones can also be used in the fight against wrinkles?
Menopause or Premenopause begins with a decline in hormones that also causes a decrease in:
-Skin's moisture

-collagen production

-lastin production
All of this leaves us with wrinkled, thin, dry skin. Not fair?
But Don't Be Disappointed - Maybe There Is Hope After All
When plant-based estrogen - called phytoestrogens - breaks down in the body they convert to estriol. Although estriol is weaker than the three main estrogens produced in the body, it is an anti-aging skin cream that is important for women with lower estrogen production.
Studies have shown that decreases in hormone production cause elastin and collagen and production to fall - leaving us with curly, sagging skin.
The Journal of the International Menopause Association states that decreasing estrogen has a profound effect on the skin and found that when women after menopause receive estrogen treatment - they experience increased collagen, elasticity, and skin thickness.
Other studies have found that in women who take estrogen replacement, the chances of dry skin wrinkling are 30% less, than those not. They also take on lifestyle habits, such as smoking and sun exposure, adjusting for these two factors, and still find estrogen benefits to skin health are important.
So What Can You Do?
Try Natural Estrogen Cream
While hormone replacement therapy may not be for everyone, there are safe alternatives that you can try to help relieve or prevent menopause. You can try natural estrogen creams (estriols) that contain plant compounds with phytoestrogenic activity.
Dr. John Lee, a pioneer and international authority on the use of natural estrogen and progesterone cream for natural hormone balance. He found that phytoestrogen creams applied to the skin can help reduce wrinkles and should be considered an important anti-aging treatment for the skin. He also found that estriol cream can help acne and acne scars.
These creams can be found at any health food store or on the internet. My favorite is a brand called Emerita. They lasted long before I needed hormones - I learned about them while working at a health food store and this brand is a favorite among pre and menopausal women.
Try Natural Progesterone Creams
USP's natural progesterone drug is also sold over the counter and is derived from plant fats and oils - a substance called diosgenin - extracted from wild beans or soybeans.
A study published in The British Journal of Dermatology documented the beneficial effect of using 2% natural progesterone cream on women's skin texture during and after menopause. The impressive results showed a 23% increase in skin tension, a 29% reduction in wrinkles around the eye area and a 10% reduction in laughter depth.
Some companies sell both natural estrogen and progesterone together in one cream product; However, you need to find the one that best suits your needs.
Some women may take estrogen and therefore only need or feel good when using progesterone cream. The other may be low in both estrogen and progesterone and require both hormones.
Please make sure you talk to your gynecologist or healthcare professional before trying any topical hormones.
Black Cohosh
A natural product that can help is the herb called Black Cohosh. It was originally used by Native Americans to reduce menstrual problems, often accompanied by this natural hormone cream. Black cohosh has been found to have a hormone-like structure, which allows it to bind to human estrogen receptors - making it a great option to correct the negative effects of hormones on the skin.
In addition, black cohosh can help prevent breakdown of skin structure support and increase the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. These herbs are often added to natural estrogen creams along with other herbs as a complete hormone balance formula.
How to Use Cream
Keep in mind, this is not a face cream, it is a natural topical hormone replacement cream used for the body to help restore proper hormone balance.
They are usually used several times a week in small quantities (1/4 of a teaspoon) to thin areas, without hair on the skin - such as in your wrist or stomach. However - very important - please make sure you talk to your gynecologist before trying any topical hormones, especially if you have hormone related health problems.
