The Scar From the Direct Necklift

Droopy or sagging neck is usually the most annoying change of face for men as they get older. Known as the wattle neck, this loose skin and fat causes the loss of neck angle. The new roll of the removed neck can get into the collar and make it difficult as it tends to move as one step. Such neck bracelets usually do not appear before the age of 55 or older unless someone has lost weight at a younger age.

Although the conventional facelift is an ideal approach for neck aging, men are more sensitive to this procedure. Concerns about his recovery, scars around the ears, lack of good hairlines and hair density, where the scars will be, and fears of being recognized for having a new face make many men avoid serious consideration.

An alternative to the new look in older men is straight neck lift. Instead of working the extra neck and back to the ear (and subsequent scars), the necklift removes the skin right in the middle of the neckline where it is located. This is a simpler operation, with very little recovery, no pain other than minor neck tension, and no changes in the hairline or scar around the ear.

The obvious weakness in lifting the neck directly is the scar. Instead of being around the ear as in a normal facelift, a midline scar that runs through the middle of the neck is created. While direct necklifts are easier and more effective in creating sharp neck angles, the relevant question is what does a scar look like and how does it look?

The best answer to that question is to look at the actual neck scar from the procedure. In Indianapolis plastic surgery practice, my experience shows that scars are quite acceptable. I have never had a male patient tell me that they regretted the procedure and thought the neck scar was worse than their original neck wick.

Why is neck scar usually good enough? In addition to good handling techniques, the main reason is the unique quality of beard skin healing. Men's skin is thicker, has more blood vessels, and cures better because of the cellular contribution of hair follicles. In addition, most men perform scars every day after surgery, they shave. This is the same as doing daily microdermabrasion scars for years.

Not all neck scars will be perfect. Some will develop some thickening of the neck injury just above the adam apple (thyroid cartilage) where the tension of the skin closure is the biggest one of isolation. For many men they do not feel that this is a problem. For others I treated her with some steroid injections or did a little z-plasty in the office to release her in the first year after surgery.
