Making Wrinkles

Wrinkles on raisins as a result of a simple effect: As the pulp in the dry, the skin grows stiff and slides to accommodate the shrinking size. Today, MIT's research team has found ways to apply the same principles in a controlled and orderly way, making the surface wrinkle with the right size and pattern.

These basic methods, they say, can be used for a variety of useful structures: microfluidic systems for biological, sensory and diagnostic research; new photonic devices that control light waves; controlled adhesive surface; antireflective coating; and surface antifouling prevents the formation of microbes.

A paper describing this new process, co-authored by MIT postdocs Jie Yin and Jose Luis Yagüe, former students of Damien Eggenspieler SM & # 39; 10, and professors Mary Boyce and Karen Gleason, was published in the journal Advanced Materials.
