Perioral Dermabrasion: Improving Wrinkles Around the Mouth

The shocking fact is that wrinkles around the mouth, sometimes called lipids or perioral rhytids, can develop as early as the 30s. The causes of these wrinkles are the combination of genetic, smoking, or sun exposure. To treat the deep lines and wrinkles around the mouth, many people today opt for perioral dermabrasion, which results in lasting results.
During the procedure, the doctor uses a dermabrader instrument to restore the skin to the desired level of skin treatment. The results can be seen immediately; However, the treatment also stimulates skin collagen remodeling, which will take place over the next six months. This leads to smoother, smoother, younger skin.
This procedure takes about an hour to complete, and can be done in an office procedure room or operating room under local anesthesia. Other procedures, such as facelift, eyelid surgery, or laser skin treatment, may be combined with perioral dermabrasion.
When the patient receives perioral dermabrasion as an isolated procedure, he or she can return home as soon as it is complete. The area around the mouth will heal for seven to 10 days after the procedure. Patients are given detailed instructions on how to care for the area. Most patients do not complain of pain after the procedure. However, any discomfort can be treated with Tylenol too dense.
About one week after the procedure, the skin will heal completely, and patients will usually notice an improvement in their appearance. The appearance around the mouth improves as the body builds new collagen, stimulated by the procedure. Rejuvenation fades for a few weeks to a month, but makeup can handle this if needed.
It is important to note that perioral dermabrasion is not the same as microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion does not help the lining of the mouth; It is done by an aesthetic expert to remove the superficial dead skin layer. On the other hand, dermabrasion is done by an experienced doctor in the procedure, which removes many layers of skin to penetrate the deepest layer.
Patients usually ask if they can use a dermal filler for the mouth area. Unfortunately, the fillers available today do not quite fit this type of line but select a few cases. Also, fillers used to treat the area can distort the lips and smile, creating a very unnatural look.
However, in less severe cases, Botox or Dysport neurotoxins may help to improve the mouth. Care should be taken when doing so to prevent smiles.
As with any plastic surgery procedure, it is important to choose an experienced and knowledgeable doctor on perioral dermabrasion and treatment of perioral rhytids to ensure the best and safest results.
