New ‘Second Skin’ Material Could Diminish Wrinkles

New papers published by researchers at MIT and other collaborators reveal that the team has developed invisible, breathable materials, such as skin that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and can also serve as a drug delivery tool.

Scientists have developed wearable materials that can make people look younger.

According to the MIT news release, the material is a type of XPL, or cross-linked polymer coating, which has the ability to "temporarily protect and tighten skin, and smooth wrinkles."

In fact, images released in a recent study show a much older woman with a line and bag that is much smaller under her eyes treated with XPL than anyone else.

One of the team members, Robert Langer, described how it worked in a video uploaded to YouTube: an invisible polymer cream was first applied to the target area, then a second white cream was placed on it to strengthen the base.

The result is an invisible, breathable overlay, like skin that can withstand scrubbing. It can also be mixed with sunscreen, extending the durability and longevity of the sunscreen.

Researchers also believe polymers can be used as drug delivery systems or as a way to protect against wound healing.

The project is a collaboration between researchers at MIT, Massachusetts General Hospital, Living Proof, and Labs Olivo. .
